The Cycle of Constipation and Weight Gain
Here is a quick breakdown of how constipation can lead to weight-gain or weight-loss plateaus.
- Constipation impairs detoxification
- That leads to toxin and hormone recirculation
- Which burdens the liver and negatively impacts metabolism
- Creating more inflammation and more water retention
This is especially common in methane-dominant SIBO or Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth, where the microbe Methanobrevibacter smithii is overgrown.
Methanobrevibacter doesn’t cause infection, but it does release methane gas in the intestines. Methane directly slows digestion and is one of the most common causes of constipation.
Motility Is Not Just About Fiber and Water
When Methanobrevibacter is overproducing methane, your gut muscles receive slower motility signals. That means stool moves more slowly, and the longer it remains in your system, the more water is absorbed, making it harder to pass.
But it’s not just water being absorbed. Toxins get reabsorbed.
Your daily bowel movement is your primary way of eliminating toxins. When stool sits in your colon, your body begins reabsorbing hormones, environmental toxins, and inflammatory microbial byproducts.
That’s a problem for detox. Because your liver now has to process those same compounds again, putting a significant burden on your detox pathways.
Why Glutathione Matters for Gut and Detox Health
Glutathione is your body’s master antioxidant and detoxification molecule. It acts like sticky paper, binding toxins, preparing them for elimination, and, as a bonus, shielding your cells from oxidative stress.
But if elimination is impaired, as it is with chronic constipation, your body has to produce more glutathione to do the same job repeatedly. Eventually, those levels can become depleted.
Here’s what symptoms of low glutathione and impaired detox feel like:
- Brain fog and fatigue
- A lower tolerance for stress
- Your skin may be dull or more prone to breakouts
- You start gaining weight, especially around the abdomen
All of that is connected to your detox capacity, and your gut plays an important role.
What I Look For on Stool Testing
In my practice, I use whole-genome stool testing to assess the microbes that might be driving chronic constipation.
Here’s what I’m usually looking for:
- Methanobrevibacter smithii: Often elevated in clients with chronic constipation and bloating, especially after taking antibiotics.
- Bifidobacteria: Often low, Bifidobacteria help regulate motility and prevent the overgrowth of methane producers and other “bad bacteria”.
- Akkermansia muciniphila: Often referred to as Nature’s Ozempic for its metabolic health benefits. It’s frequently low in clients who’ve done restrictive diets for long periods.
- Butyrate-producing bacteria: These are usually depleted, and that matters because butyrate nourishes the colon cells, improves motility, reduces inflammation, and enhances insulin sensitivity.
I also look at microbial diversity and pH, because Methanobrevibacter thrives in a more alkaline colonic environment. A pH above 6.5 increases the likelihood of overgrowth.
A Real Client Example: Jenny’s Story
Let me give you a quick example.
I worked with a woman named Jenny. She came in with classic symptoms: chronic bloating, constipation, weight gain around the midsection, and fatigue that made her feel like she was dragging through her day.
Her labs were “normal.” Her gastroenterologist had ruled out Irritable Bowel Disease and other serious conditions. But she knew something wasn’t right.
These are the tests we ran:
- Metabolomix to assess her detox pathways and glutathione levels
- Tiny Health Pro stool test to assess her microbiome and methane levels
- She had already had SIBO breath testing done
Here’s what her results showed:
- High methane production
- Low butyrate producers
- Low Bifidobacteria
- Colonic pH of 7.8
In about four months, by strategically regrowing her beneficial microbes, increasing the diversity of her diet, optimizing detox support, and reducing methanogens, we saw her transit time improve from 48 hours to under 24 hours. Her bloating decreased by 80 percent, and she began losing weight without reducing calories.
What Disrupts the Microbiome in the First Place?
What causes these microbial imbalances?
- Antibiotic use (even if it was years ago)
- Overuse of antimicrobial supplements like berberine and oil of oregano
- Low intake of prebiotic fiber and polyphenols
- Artificial sweeteners like sucralose or aspartame
- Emulsifiers and additives like carrageenan and polysorbate-80
- Long-term use of low-FODMAP or low-carb diets
This is why temporary diets often give temporary results. They may reduce symptoms in the short term, but if they’re not followed by restoring the microbiome, they leave the gut more depleted than before.
What You Can Do Today
Step 1: Test smarter
Use a stool test with whole genome sequencing. This will show you your levels of the key microbes we discussed and whether methane production is likely an issue.

Step 2: Rebuild your beneficial microbes
Incorporate foods that feed your Bifidobacteria and butyrate producers:
- Cooked onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus (if tolerated)
- Ground flax or chia
- Resistant starch from green banana or cooked-and-cooled potatoes
- Berries, red cabbage, and polyphenol-rich vegetables
Step 3: Go slow and track progress
If you’ve been constipated long-term, your gut may be sensitive. Reintroduce one food at a time, monitor your response, and give your microbiome time to adapt.
